Elk Camp 2009 : The Rae Elk Camp For over 20 years, Don Rae and his friends have been elk hunting in the back country of Central Idaho. If there was room and you were lucky, hopefully you would get invited. In other words, getting invited to Rae elk camp was not only an adventure but a privilege. In 1998 I was invited to elk camp and I haven't missed one since. Elk Camp is more than just shooting elk. Elk Camp is an experience and an adventure that allows you to escape the rigors of work and the stresses of life. In the early years, before the Forest Service restricted motorcycles and ATV's, transporting equipment eleven miles into the old Bull Creek Rae camp was challenging to say the least. Seldom did a season go by that somebody didn't "roll an ATV off the mountain including myself. In 2002 I rolled a new 2002 Polaris ATV off the mountain, although I got lucky and survived, the ATV didn't fare as well. About five years ago the Forest Service decided the trail was "too dangerous" and restricted all motorized vehicles until they could "improve" the trail. They improved the trail and built nine new bridges across the creek crossings making the trail like a "free-way" to put it mildly. As expected, the Forest Service has since restricted all motorized vehicles access to "their trail?" Thank you Forest Service, I thought the tax payers owned the land. Fortunately Don and Margie Rae own property above Silver Creek near Garden Valley which is in the general vicinity where the old camp was located. I have organized a series of Rae Elk camp pictures to give you an idea of "Elk Camp." Although every year someone usually gets and elk, the experience is more than about "getting an elk." It's a time to be with your friends, drink a few beers, forget about work, tell a few stories and to survive the elements. There's nothing like the massive camp fires and the incredible meals that our chef John Kenney prepares. It's just a good time and a lot of hard-good-work! I guess we can no longer use the term "roughing-it" any longer, you decide. In 1995 the Federal Wildlife Service introduced a breed of wolves that were NOT indigenous to the Northwest. Prior to 1995, the elk and deer were abundant in Sawtooth Unit's 33, 34 and 35. It was recently reported that these units had the lowest number of elk harvested in 2008. One of the excuses for the low elk count was due "habitat degradation" and to "noxious weeds?" For those of us that frequent this area, we know what caused the depletion of the elk herds...wolves. We have found numerous dead deer and elk that have been killed by the wolves with little of any meat eaten. The forest service closed our trail and the Federal Wildlife are allowing the wolves to kill the elk and deer We will enjoy Elk Camp while we can.

Dog walking ponds : The photos in this series were taking near down town Boise, Idaho along the Boise River and across from Veterans Park. This area is in the process of being converted to a park which will be named Esther Simplot park. Prior to the publicity surrounding the area due to the building of whitewater park on the Boise river and adjacent to this park, more people are finding out about this natural wilderness in the middle of town. Most often I walk my dogs early in the morning around sunrise. The peaceful tranquility gives me the feeing that I have my personal "Walden Pond." Unfortunately I sense this will soon be changing, but I have captured the beauty in my photos I feel it is time to share them. Over the years I have been taking photos at different times of the season. As you will see, there is a dramatic change in the scenery and the wildlife with the seasonal changes. I usually carry my camera because I never know what to expect. Although there are crude areas around the ponds that add to the mystic, with the development of the "park," I'm sure this is about to change. Enjoy the photos and feel free to share this ink with your friends.

Before and After Projects 8/10 : This gallery is a collection of wood working projects that I have been working on over the past few years. I have attempted to show the various stages of development to allow for greater appreciation for the finished project. Working with different types of old dried cured wood that would most likely be burned or trashed is like opening a Christmas present or "box-of-mixed-chocolates," you never know what is inside. When it comes to wood, you never know what you have spent your time on until the finish coatings are applied. Woodworking is not a business for me, it's a form of relief that gives me great satisfaction, especially since I am not an artist. I currently have two businesses and don't need another one at this time. If I ever retire, I don't think I will be bored or spend a lot time on the golf course. At times I've considered selling some creations so I can buy more tools and materials but for now, I enjoy holding, feeling and looking at my creations. Each piece is a learning project. Unfortunately when you remove wood, you can't put the wood back on.

Idaho Bird Observatory Sept 2012 : The Idaho Bird Observatory is located on top of the mountains north of Boise, Idaho. This research observatory bands and does research on Birds of Prey, song birds and owls. These photos were taken during a banding operation on September 28, 2012 by Michael McCullough, DC of Boise. Students from Foothill school were participating durning an overnight field trip.
